The project

Lester B. Pearson International is one of the largest airports in North America, and like any structure at that scale it moves. Thermal cycling, seismic loading and settlement all act on the same pipe penetrations that a fire barrier has to seal. A conventional firestop, rated in a lab on a penetration that never budges, does not answer that.

432 Design engineered the first dynamically-moving pipe-penetration fire barrier system for the Greater Toronto Airport Authority — the PyroFlex UPF Series, including the under-slab configuration. The barrier maintains its seal through the full movement range of the penetration rather than only at rest.

Certification was the point, not an afterthought. The system was cycle-tested to 500 cycles against both seismic and thermal movement, then fire-barrier tested at Omega Point Laboratories, and carries UL 2079 Class I, II and III listings against ASTM E1966 for fire-resistive joint systems.
