Four disciplines that keep running into each other.
432 Design works where the answer is not on a shelf. Every engagement is scoped and priced to the project.
01
Laser Systems
Pulsed fiber laser ablation for coating, corrosion and contaminant removal — the machine, the Class IV safety program that makes it legal to run, and the crew trained to do it.
Full detail432 Design designs, builds and commissions pulsed fiber laser ablation systems, writes the safety and compliance programs that let a shop run them legally, and trains the crews. The FP-300 went from a sketch to eight units in the field, and remains the only laser currently in use in aviation MRO for corrosion and paint removal.
The hard part of laser ablation is not the laser. It is removing a coating without putting heat into the substrate underneath — which on landing gear, skin panels or composite means knowing exactly how much energy the part can take, and giving the operator a way to see thermal build-up while it happens. That is the part we engineer.
The other hard part is regulatory. A 300 W Class IV laser inside a Part 145 hangar sits under OSHA, FDA, FAA and — for European-certificated work — EASA at the same time, and a shop that cannot document compliance cannot run the machine. So the safety manual, the SOPs, the Laser Safety Officer role and the SMS integration are part of what gets delivered, not somebody else's problem.
- Pulsed fiber laser ablation system design
- Coating, corrosion and paint removal process development
- Substrate thermal limits and heat-monitoring methodology
- Class IV laser safety programs — ANSI Z136, OSHA 29 CFR 1926.54, FDA 21 CFR 1040.10
- EASA Part 145 and SMS documentation; FAA AC 70-1B and Form 7140-1 filings
- Laser Safety Officer role definition, audit programs and incident procedures
- Prototype through low-rate production builds
- On-site commissioning and operator training

Fire Barrier Systems
Firestop and fire-resistive joint systems for penetrations that move — designed to be tested, certified and installed, not just drawn.
Full detailMost firestop assumes the penetration holds still. Real buildings do not: pipes move with thermal cycling, structures move with seismic loading, and a barrier that is rated at rest can fail the first time the building breathes.
432 Design engineers dynamically-moving pipe-penetration fire barrier systems and carries them through the testing that makes them specifiable — UL 2079 and ASTM E1966 cycling, then the fire test. The first such system was designed for the Greater Toronto Airport Authority and cycle-tested 500 times before it ever saw flame.
- Dynamic pipe-penetration fire barrier design
- Fire-resistive joint systems (ASTM E1966)
- UL 2079 Class I, II and III movement classes
- Seismic and thermal cycle testing programs
- Third-party lab test coordination and witness
- Submittal, detail and installation documentation

Electromechanical Engineering
Machines that have to move, sense, switch and survive a shop floor — mechanical design, power, controls and instrumentation treated as one problem, because that is what they are.
Full detailMost of the firm's work is electromechanical. A laser ablation system is a frame, a motion system and a thermal path as much as it is optics and power electronics, and splitting those into separate disciplines is how a machine ends up with a control architecture the mechanical design cannot accommodate.
So it is handled together: enclosure and frame design, motion systems, thermal management, power distribution, control architecture, instrumentation, and the safety interlocks that make high-energy equipment safe to stand next to. Plus the unglamorous detail — fastener schedules, service access, cable routing — that decides whether a machine survives contact with the people using it.
There is a process side to this too. Taking a prototype to repeatable low-rate production means designing the build sequence, the fixtures and the test steps, not just the product. And a fair amount of the work is retrofit: diagnosing equipment somebody else designed that has never quite worked, and making it work.
- Machine, enclosure and frame design
- Motion systems and custom production equipment
- Thermal management and heat-path analysis
- Control architecture, power distribution and panel design
- Instrumentation, sensing and real-time monitoring
- Safety interlocks for high-energy equipment
- Prototype to low-rate production, including fixtures and test steps
- Field troubleshooting, retrofit and commissioning

Oil & Gas Consulting
Petroleum, oil and gas consulting — engineering judgement applied to equipment, systems and procedures in an industry where the cost of getting it wrong is measured in more than money.
Full detail432 Design consults on petroleum, oil and gas work, bringing the same discipline the firm applies everywhere else: understand what has to be true when the job is done, design against the standard that actually decides, and document it so the people in the field can execute it.
The overlap with the rest of the practice is real rather than marketing. High-energy equipment, thermal limits, fire and life-safety separation, control and instrumentation, and the gap between a drawing and what a crew can install — these are the same problems that show up in aviation MRO and in a fire barrier at an airport.
- Equipment and systems review
- Fire and life-safety separation
- Instrumentation and monitoring
- Procedure and documentation development
- Field assessment and troubleshooting
