About

A small firm that takes on the “can't be done” jobs.

432 Design, LLC is an engineering consultancy run by Jamie Buturff. The work spans four disciplines — laser ablation systems, fire barrier systems, electromechanical engineering, and petroleum, oil and gas — and tends to land on the same kind of problem: something a client needs that does not exist yet, or exists and does not work.

Two projects describe the firm well. The first dynamically-moving pipe-penetration fire barrier system, engineered for the Greater Toronto Airport Authority and carried through 500 movement cycles and a fire test to UL 2079 and ASTM E1966 listing. And the FP-300 pulsed fiber laser, taken from concept to eight units in service — still the only laser in use in aviation MRO for corrosion and paint removal.

Neither started as a product. Both started as a customer describing a problem that the available answers did not solve.

The background is a trade background: electrician, then project manager, then director of R&D. That order matters. It is the reason the firm designs against the test that actually decides, documents work so it can be installed by the people who will install it, and stays on site to commission the thing and train the crew that inherits it.

Clients have included the Greater Toronto Airport Authority, the Pentagon Restoration Project, the Washington, D.C. Convention Center, the Georgia Department of Transportation, Clark Construction and EllisDon on the infrastructure side — and Textron Aviation, Netflix Aviation, Skyborne Airline Academy and a dozen other maintenance operations on the laser side.

Engagements range from a short review of somebody else's design to carrying a product from concept through certification. Every engagement is scoped and priced to the project.

Background

From the field up.

Field

Started as an electrician

The trade first. Power, controls and installation learned on job sites, which is why the drawings that come out of this shop account for what an installer can physically do.

Delivery

Project management

Running jobs rather than just drawing them — schedule, budget, subs, inspections and the coordination between trades that decides whether a design survives construction.

R&D

Director of research and development

Growing companies and directing product development, including the PyroFlex dynamic fire barrier program and its full UL and ASTM certification campaign.

Firm

432 Design, LLC

Founded in downtown Sedona, Arizona. Laser ablation systems, fire barrier engineering, the electromechanical work both depend on, and oil and gas consulting.

Inventor conceives energy breakthrough

“Buturff has invented life safety devices for the Toronto International Airport, constructing Underwriters Laboratories, or UL, approved earthquake-resistant fire barrier systems. He's also worked as a consultant for the Pentagon, advising staff on waterproofing and its effect on eavesdropping prevention systems.”

How we work

Design for how it will be built.

The tagline is not decoration. Work with how materials, heat and structures actually behave — and with what a crew can realistically fabricate, install and service — and the result needs less force, less maintenance and fewer exceptions to hold up in the field.
